Rune looks directly into Whitakker's eyes, his one grey eye piercing the man's aggressive, yet kind, shell.
"Shut up."
With that, Rune stands up and walks away, approaching Thanatos once again.
"This Machine seems to be the only one with any wits in the whole camp, and naturally, he's the one I'm supposed to kill. A pity," he mumbles to himself. He finishes his approach to the android, and stands beside him, gazing intently at the fire with his visible eye.
"Look, Thanatos... I have a bad feeling about tomorrow. You seem to be the leader of this... merry party... and I thought you should know. I'm not usually wrong about this type of thing," Rune whispers, knowing that only Thanatos can hear.
"But if anything happens..." he continues, as the firelight dances across the plate singed into his skin over his left eye,"Try not to let anyone except for the birdman get hurt."
He walks away, wondering why he was already looking out for this caravan, even though he loathed them all.
As he lays down to rest, he can't escape the similarity between himself and his soon-to-be victim as the firelight had danced across their semi-veiled faces.

*Whitakker simply sat there as Rune made his remark, taking it all in stride. Things like that just didn't upset him or offend him, really. Oh well...Whitakker got up, and sat next to Dimitri.
"My, isn't he a pleasant fellow, eh?", Whitakker remarked to Dimitri in an cheerily sarcastic tone.

"Oh yeah, he's a regular bottle of pep." Dimitri chuckles as he leans back on the ground. Dimitri looks over towards Rune and laughs. "I'm sure that if he smiled, his face would crack."
Dimitri reaches over towards his bag and pulls out a book and begins to read. After a short time passes, Dimitri shuts the book in frustration and stands up.
Geez, I'm bored. I wish we could hurry up and leave.
Dimitri stretches out his arms and lets out a large yawn.
I might as well turn in.
"Goodnight, Kimato, Whitakker." Dimitri yawns as he spreads out his blanket on the ground. Looking toward Kimato, he smiles a blank, sleepy smile.
"Anything you wanna talk about before I sleep? Politics, art, poetry, the lunatic that attacked our fearless leader?"

Kimato looks up at Dimitri blankly for a moment, then blinks and smiles back.
"No thank you for tonight, friend Dimitri. I think I shall soon join the land of the sleeping myself. It has been a tiring day. Sleep well."
Nodding toward Whitakker stiffly, she stands and, retrieving her own bag from the ground, moves away from the group, seeking solitude outside their protective, closed circle. Laying her bag down, she pulls out the red and white kimono. Giving it a shake, she sees something go flying and fall to the ground. Crawling forward, she picks up the object...the picture of the little family from Nicholi's mansion. Turning it over, she sees a crack in the glass.
Great. Just great. You could be more careful, you know. These things are not yours.
The crack is not bad, only obscuring the face of the man holding the baby girl...the face that is so familiar. Staring at the picture, she tries hard to remember where she has seen that face. Still, she cannot manage to recall. Sighing, she carefully places the picture back in her bag. Then, wrapping herself in the kimono for warmth, she lays her head down and closes her eyes, saying her usual prayer for her companions' safety and Nicholi's welfare.

Thanatos nods once at Rune's words of warning, still in the midst of performing the truly minute self repair work necessary to keep his functionalities at maximum efficiency.
There is something ominous in the air, a forboding atmosphere which even I am capable of detecting. The coming day will almost assuredly be problematic, for it is highly unlikely the expedition might reach the gates of the Ruined City without incurring an encounter of some sort. It would be most logical to devote additional power to sensor relays, safeguarding the camp so that the rest of the individuals in this caravan can conserve their strength. They will most likely need it...
At this Thanatos slowly replaces his tools in his slim metal suitcase, laying it carefully at his side before concentrating on continually scanning the camp's perimeter. It makes for a very long night.
---------------------------------------------------------------- It is now the final day of the expedition.
The expedition has made steady progress throughout the morning and early afternoon, and estimates place the Ruined City at only about fifty kilometers away. Whatever was left of the Traderoad has since disappeared, forcing the caravan to take to the barren, grayish-brown plain that now completely dominates the horizon. This close to the Ruined City not even a blade of grass stirs; it seems that even the most insignificant of life long ago died off this close to the mammoth graveyard that was once the proud city of Celaria.
In the distance can be seen hints of a glimmering stone that blankets the plain, and further ahead than that, hints of broken skyscrapers that loom countless kilometers in the air. As the group gradually makes it way closer to its destination, it becomes clear that the shimmering stone covering the barren plain up ahead is none other than Aegisite, the substance considered so rare on the rest of the continent.
Unfortunately, the danger sensed by many members of the expedition the previous night has materialized. Dust clouds have been steadily forming on the horizon directly behind the expedition, and even now small specks are becoming visible amongst the clouds that must be automobiles. It is painfully clear to everyone that these strange pursuers will reach the group before they themselves reach the Aegisite plain dead ahead...

Syrant glances back to see that which he had felt for a long time.
"Seems like they caught up."
Knowing that he will probably have to fight soon Syrant takes one hand off the wheel of his vehicle and pulls out one of his guns. Syrant looks over to the rest of the group and hopes they have already started preparing for what is to come.

*Whitakker squints and looks into the distance at the dark specks on the horizon, having no doubts in his mind as to what they are.*
"Oh, great. Didn't we just leave this party a while back? Oh well...back to the salt mines again..."
*Whitakker lets Skye out of the vehicle, and the eagle flies over the caravan, scanning ahead to size up the attack force. Whitakker then sits back in the seat and mentally prepares himself for the battle to come.*

Noticing the actions of the other caravan members, Dimitri slows down his bike.
YES! Finally, some action!
Dimitri's smile turns into one of devious joy. AS he brings his bike to a total stop he turns to Kimato.
"Looks like we're gonna have a party, you might want to get ready.

Kimato stares blankly back at Dimitri, her thoughts a whirl of confusion and fear. She would like to respond, to smile, to do SOMETHING, but her own thoughts are smothered by thoughts that are not her own...sounds, images, and words that are not her own, that she doesn't even understand. Putting a hand to her forehead, she tries to will them to be quiet...to no avail.
Not right now...not now...please...I cannot let it overcome me now! She feels as she did in the cottage the night Nicholi had found her...as if a blanket of darkness was covering her, pushing her down, farther and farther into herself, and taking over the surface. Only this time, there is no light of Heaven to save her, no warm voice to call her back and make her hold on.
No...
The others seem not to notice that Kimato's calamity as they prepare for the battle. None of them can see that as the MASS grow closer, Kimato's control over her mind grows weaker. Looking wide-eyed at Dimitri, she manages to force out two words.
"Get....a-a...away..."

"I'm going to say there's enough of them to give us a fight."
Syrant lowers his glasses. His eyes seem to darken as the MASS army gets closer. Syrant yells out to the group.
"Well are we going keep running or are we going to give them fight?"

"Kimato? What do you mean? What's wrong? Are you feeling sick?" Dimitri says in a puzzled voice. As he looks at Kimato, he notices she's sweating and seems to be struggling to speak.
Is she having some sort of a fit?
"Kimato, is there something I can do to help? Please, just tell me and I'll help!" Dimitri stammers rapidly.
Don't panic, stay cool, control yourself.
Dimitri's mind begins to rush through a jumble of thoughts. There was something amiss here.
Something's not right. I can't remember what though. It something about Kimato and the Mass. Something really important, I overheard Nicholi say it once when we first met... Oh God, please help me remember... Dimitri's mind screams as he rushes to try and help Kimato steady herself.
Suddenly, the shock of realization as to what was happening hit Dimitri. As he looks at the struggling Kimato, he remembers how she ended up in Anhelo Manor.
She was possesed..

(Since Rune won't be posting for awhile, let's consider him to be in the background, but still actively participating.)
Thanatos slowly eases his strange motorcycle to a stop, leaping from the still-moving vehicle in one smooth motion. His visor focuses intently on the far horizon of billowing dust and ominous specks behind the expedition, his vast array of sensory devices carefully analyzing the foe that will soon be faced. It does not take long for the android to report his results.
"There are eight vehicles in view. Six are makeshift flat-bed transports, each capable of holding six individuals in addition to the driver. The remaining two appear to be refurbished Type Z-12 Assault Vehicles, evidently scavenged from ancient ruins. Each of these holds two pilots and one gunner and is armed with a high-impact explosive cannon accurate to the nearest meter. The armaments of the MASS-possessed appear to consist of blades and makeshift firearms--nevertheless, their numbers could prove to be overwhelmingly fatal."
The android turns swiftly on his heel to face the remainder of the group, his features composed and neutral.
"I will proceed ahead and disable the Assault Vehicles. Otherwise, they will be more than capable of destroying our position from afar. It--"
Thanatos stops, his attention focused on the little drama between Dimitri and Kimato which now seems to have reached a rather disturbing peak. It takes less than a fraction of a second for the assassin to grasp the delicacy of the current situation, nodding subtly in Syrant's direction as one black-gloved hand slips stealthily into his heavy overcoat.
"Dimitri, it appears the Lady Kimato is experiencing difficulty. It would not be advisable to allow her to remain in her current condition--please remove her from this vicinity immediately. There can be no distractions or elements unaccounted for if this expedition is to survive the coming encounter."

“Thanatos I have full faith in you fighting capabilities, but I do not wish for you to sacrifice yourself.” (Argis says eyeing Thanatos reaction but as always no response.) "To give us a slight advantage but I do have a few ideas. Like I sure you and Syrant have a few explosives with you and do the host of the mass need rest for that would the perfect time to strike. If not then we can set traps like a modified version of the catapult flipper it will get rid of a few vehicles with only needing a pounds of explosives like a grenade. We need the element of surprise maybe Kimato’s fits over fighting the mass might just be what we need you see there is six of us and we keep pretty close so if we say Whittaker drives his car due to the fact he knows how to drive it better than the rest of us also because it’s the biggest and probably the thing watched most by the mass. Kimato should rides with Dimitri; sorry but I don’t fully trust Whittaker with her and the fact you probably know her better than all of us. You guys then drive out for a mile or until you see/hear fighting then come to our rescue. Rune do you have and rockets left for those will aid greatly in the element of surprise. They have yet to met you or know that you have joined us. If that is fine by you guys then I make a better detailed plan; but if you have better one than speak. By the way what is the E.T.A. of the mass."

Kimato watches from eyes that no longer seem to be her own as Dimitri turns to Thanatos. Thanatos is obviously preparing to fight, giving Dimitri instructions. Then the man called Argis speaks up...but Kimato cannot hear what any of them are saying. She cannot hear anything but a deafening, black silence pressing against her, pushing her farther into herself, farther away from where she can be any help to Dimitri.
Dimitri, you idiot! Get away from me! If you do not move in time, the MASS will attack you!
Still, she can only sit there and watch through these eyes that aren't hers as Dimitri turns back to her and his eyes widen in surprise and even fear. For a change is coming over Kimato's appearance as the dormant MASS awakens and takes control. Her red hair slowly darkens, going from red to auburn, to brunette, to finally a black so black it seems light is swallowed by it. Her skin darkens, also, to a tan color, as her eyes, the one thing about her that had never changed, followed her hair into the empty blackness.
Kimato watches in horror as her own hand reaches into her pocket, pulling out her chakram, and sweeps it upward, the sharp edges seconds away from connecting with Dimitri's jaw.
