Welcome to the Arena! This board has been created with the goal of providing an avenue through which to resolve or ease conflict between players, as well as a place players can enjoy recreational tournaments or single event matches through role-played combat. Naturally, player vs. player combat only succeeds when both parties are willing to adhere to a fair and balanced list of guidelines. The following are general rules of thumb that should be practiced in any Arena combat, in addition to ToP's general rules list.
1. Be realistic. While hardly a perfect representation of real life, characters in Tales of Phantomile are still forced to comply with the general laws of the time-space continuem. No impossible stunts, magical strikes, or stupid invincibility. No surviving fifteen bullets, five stabs, and a hand grenade without a scratch. No "going faster than the eye can see," despite the fact that the opposing character is just as if not faster than your own. No "super sayan 999999999999 insta kill lol" attacks. Show logic and reason in your actions, or I will revoke your license to live.
2. Control only your character. In a role-played combat situation, players are only allowed to describe attacks and counterattacks. Players are never allowed to describe the impact of the attack in the same post that they first attempt the strike. Opponents should always be given the chance to write a counterattack or at least describe the opposing side's attack in their own way. This is absolutely vital to the combat experience.
3. Be courteous. This walks hand in hand with the other two rules. While it is always left up to the player as to whether or not an attack strikes their character, there is a certain degree of courteousy expected in an arena environment. If you're trapped in an impossible-to-dodge situation, take a hit. Otherwise, you might find your opponent far less willing to respond to your own attacks. Role-played combat eventually boils down to a fine level of strategy intermeshed with imagery and detailed description. Try your best to excel at both.
Expect these rules to be updated at any time. Referees known as "battlemasters" will preside over events and handle any grievances in a case of combat. It will also be up to the battlemaster to decide the winner of a match--if there is a situation in which one party has been overly unrealistic in attaining victory, the other side may very well be rewarded with a win. Here is the current list of battlemasters:
Nicholi
Syrant
Thanatos
Note that repeated violations of the rules outlined above will lead to a permanent dismissal from ToP's arena board.
