Tales of Phantomile is suffering a ridiculous amount of growth. This is a fact.
When Tales of Phantomile was originally created about a year ago, it was intended as a permanent online role-play in which a group of about five or six people would play out what amounted to a fairly dull and unoriginal storyline. Then more people started being invited to join the site, and of course these new invitees told more people about the game, and so word gradually spread. Our current member count is substantially higher than was ever expected, believe me.
With this rapid rise comes new problems, as are being evidenced more and more clearly each day. It is growing exceedingly difficult to place players in the underlying storyline of the site while maintaining even the slightest bit of realism and continuity in the plot itself.
Thus I have a proposal: What if we were to turn Tales of Phantomile into much more of a free roaming environment, with the quest to destroy the MASS acting as only a backdrop to countless other player-created threads?
In other words, I want future players to play in the world of ToP without necessarily participating in the Mission itself. This would allow players to much more focus on social interaction and character development, and would also mean that they would be granted a much larger degree of creative license.
Want to be a blacksmith working in an isolated First Continent town, portraying first hand the brutal governments of the region? Go ahead. Want to play a Syndicate agent, hunting a police chief played by another member? Have fun. Want to portray a soldier enlisted in the Grand Confederation of Xenon, fighting battles with an endless array of strange and unique gadgetry? Be my guest.
The possibilities are endless. Tales of Phantomile is a very big world, with countless opportunities.
So what does everyone else think? Naturally groups would still run into each other and threads collide, but what I am suggesting is that the mission to destroy the MASS no longer be the only role-playing opportunity within the Tales of Phantomile world. Comments welcome.
