This was suggested by Dimitri in another thread...probably as more of a joke than anything else. But I thought perhaps he was right...sometimes, in the heat of a debate, we forget what we're here for, and we get offended and angry...and we may say things that could go without being said. So, here's an anger management course! ;D
Lesson One: How To Avoid Misunderstandings In Debate
When making posts on the OOC boards, it is important to remember that you are attacking IDEAS, not the people who hold them. Although it is still very irksome to have your ideas attacked, it is less provoking than you yourself being attacked. Therefor, read before you post. Make sure you've made your point clearly and coherently, and make sure that it is attacking THE IDEA, NOT the person who holds that idea.
For Example:
It's people like you that will aid America in its downward spiral.
This is a BAD example. Notice the phrase "people like you." The you directs the attack AT THE PERSON, NOT THE IDEA.
It is this passive, lazy attitude that will aid America in its downward spiral.
This is a good example. The phrase "people like you" has been removed. Now the object of criticism is not the PEOPLE themselves, but the position they hold. The idea is still received, without the affront.
Disclaimer: I have taken some examples from ToP posts, but not indicated names. They are not always quoted directly, but are inspired by posts made in the past. This is not meant to target any individual, but is only a practical demonstration.
Correct these samples to be directed at the IDEA, not the PEOPLE.
1. Face it, the main force you conservatives have supporting you is the scared and religious.
2. I am quite sure I will never understand you liberals and your dirty politics.
